Los Angeles, CA (March 26, 2014) In reaction to the severe drought conditions in California as well as increasing pressure and demands on our nation’s water supply, AEG 1EARTH is launching a water conservation campaign throughout its AEG Facilities-affiliated venues to raise awareness of the growing water crisis. The campaign, launched today at several of the division’s venues in California, will provide suggestions for AEG’s employees, facility guests and the general public to help conserve water and contribute to the initiative.

The campaign, officially running from World Water Day (March 22) through Earth Day (April 22), will leverage special events, in-venue signage, social media, online media and other platforms to encourage everyone to take small conservation steps to help reduce the overwhelming pressures on our water supply.

“Thousands of people pass through our doors every day, giving us a unique opportunity to reach the public,” notes John Marler, AEG’s Senior Director of Energy and Environment Systems. “With this campaign, we’re taking advantage of that opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of water conservation not only in our AEG Facilities venues in California, where the drought has been particularly severe, but throughout the nation.”

Some of the key events and programs launched during the campaign taking place at AEG Facilities-affiliated venues throughout California include:

  • Rabobank Arena, Bakersfield, CA: On World Water Day (March 22), a water conservation promotion with CalWater was held during an a ECHL hockey game between the Bakersfield Condors and the Ontario Reign. Both teams promoted water conservation at the game and kicked off a month-long competition to see which venue, Rabobank Arena or Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA, can save the most water.
  • Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario, CA: An Earth Day open house for Cucamonga Valley Water District in Rancho Cucamonga April 5, sponsored and promoted by Citizens Business Bank Arena.
  • STAPLES Center, Los Angeles, CA: NBA Green Week Earth Fair at STAPLES Center, including a booth hosted by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power highlighting water conservation tips and incentives.
  • StubHub Center, Carson, CA: An Easter Egg Hunt and Earth Day Celebration hosted by the LA Galaxy Foundation and the StubHub Center Foundation on April 17, featuring a West Basin Municipal Water District station highlighting water conservation resources.
  • Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario, CA: Water conservation promotion at the Ontario Reign playoff hockey game on Earth Day, April 22. If the stars align, this game will be a rematch with the Bakersfield Condors, which will raise the stakes when the winner of the water conservation competition is announced!

AEG has long challenged the live sports and entertainment industry to prioritize environmental performance and is dedicated to reducing the company’s water footprint worldwide, especially in California where AEG is headquartered and owns or manages 19 sports and entertainment facilities. In 2007, AEG set a company-wide goal to reduce water consumption per event attendee by 20% by 2020. In 2012, AEG reported a 16% reduction and looks forward to reporting further progress in the upcoming 2014 AEG 1EARTH Sustainability Report.

Several AEG Facilities-affiliated venues in California have played an integral role in helping AEG reduce its water footprint. Examples of how AEG Facilities venues have worked to conserve California’s water in the past few years include:

  • In October 2013, Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario implemented a project to recycle water from its cooling towers, which will save an estimated 5.5 million gallons of water annually.
  • From 2007 to 2009, AEG retrofitted all Southern California facilities with 496 waterless urinals, including 178 at STAPLES Center, savingalmost 20 million gallons of water annually.
  • In 2012, Rabobank Arena, Theater and Convention Center and San Joaquin Hospital Community Ice Center in Bakersfield won the Kern Green Water Efficiency and Conservation Award after conducting a water audit and replacing 516 fixtures with water-saving technologies.
  • StubHub Center in Carson uses municipal reclaimed water to irrigate its landscaping.
  • Nine of AEG Facilities-affiliated venues in California have installed low-flow toilets; 12 have low-flow sinks; nine have low-flow or waterless urinals; and eight have low-flow showerheads.
  • In March 2014, the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles retrofitted its dressing rooms with 11 low-flow faucets, four low-flow toilets and two low-flow showerheads.

While AEG will formally conclude this water conservation awareness campaign on Earth Day, April 22nd, AEG will continue to pursue water savings initiatives at our facilities worldwide and seek opportunities to encourage our employees, guests and members of the public to do the same.

AEG’s sustainability program not only focuses on water conservation, but also on reducing environmental impacts across areas including energy and climate, waste, and purchasing. Examples of sustainability projects at AEG Facilities’ venues, include installing a PathoSans green cleaning system, which produces nontoxic cleaning solutions on-site using only water, salt and electricity at the KFC Yum! Center (Louisville, KY), completing a $600,000 energy efficiency lighting retrofit and using only zero or low emissions janitorial equipment at Oracle Arena & Coliseum (Oakland, CA) ; and, at Target Center (Minneapolis, MN), installing the 5th largest green roof in the U.S.
