Position Summary:

The Director, Arena Operations will report to the General Manager and oversee all back-of-house operations as it relates to facility services, conversions, housekeeping, engineering, electrical, carpentry, and loading dock operations during event and non-event times.

The incumbent will ensure that all back-of-house departments work in sync so that NYCB Live, Home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum operates optimally at all times and that patrons, clients and promoter/production managers are consistently treated in a first class, professional manner while producing successful events. This role will have a heavy focus on ice maintenance as it relates to hockey and other ice-specific events.

Essential Functions:

  • Providing operational expertise and management of 14,000+ seat, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility
  • Directs and actively participates in the discussion and decision-making process relative to all areas of Facility Operations
  • Supervises Operations/Conversions Managers, Electricians, Engineers, Carpenters, Parking, Housekeeping, etc. including hiring, career development, work orders and direction of daily activities and management of their respective employees
  • Ensures all programs and procedures are in place to maintain security, safety and enjoyment of clients, guests and employees on a daily and event basis
  • Ensures all operational activities related to the holding of events at NYCB Live, from preparation of estimates to final settlement, are handled in a timely, accurate and thorough manner
  • Managing third party service providers by enforcing the agreed upon scope of services within the various signed service agreements (i.e. parking, pest control, waste management, snow removal, elevators/escalator, housekeeping etc.)
  • Participates in and actively contributes to all Staff and Director meetings
  • Responsible for purchase, maintenance and repair of all facilities and equipment, including HVAC equipment, compressors, energy systems, ice plant, meeting rooms, and offices
  • Selects, contracts with, and monitors the work of qualified professionals for various outsourced operations and maintenance responsibilities
  • Developing standard operating procedures for operational functions of the facility, including engineering, conversions, maintenance, housekeeping, and loading dock logistics
  • Supervise ice resurfacing and staff as well as maintain all related equipment
  • Oversees all construction, renovation, and equipment changes and/or purchases
  • Oversees the cleanliness of the facilities, equipment, and mechanical areas including spectator and public areas
  • Oversees the accurate recordkeeping for all maintenance and repairs to Company machinery and equipment
  • Develops practical and realistic Operational and Capital budgets as well as approve and monitor expenses
  • Supervising cost accounting expenses for overall operations budget including but not limited to house equipment rental, supplies and services purchased, event supervision, and staff
  • Negotiating and enforcing labor union contracts while effectively interacting with Union representatives
  • Serves as the Operations liaison with other NYCB Live Managers, Promoters, and Tour and/or Event Managers
  • Continuously reviews current Operations needs and makes recommendations to the General Manager
  • Serves as the Manager on Duty for arena events as scheduled
  • Projects as required by the General Manager

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum education level of BA/BS Degree (4-year) in Facility Management, Sports Management or related area
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of related work experience in facility arena operations and event production
  • Knowledge of the functions, operations, and equipment of a multi-purpose entertainment complex, as well as the event production side
  • Working knowledge of ice installation and maintenance
  • Experience managing a Union environment
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and motivate a diverse workforce
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, promoters, suppliers, guests and visitors
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with local fire and police departments and other government entities
  • Ability to multi-task and problem solve in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work a demanding schedule including nights, weekends, holidays, double shifts
  • Excellent verbal, written and public relations skills
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical and computer energy management systems
  • Knowledge of and compliance with Federal and State OSHA regulations
  • Knowledge of safety practices, including first aid and all applicable safety standards for public facilities
  • Solid accounting and finance skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel
