Position Summary:

Provides specialized Event Security at the Convention Center.

Essential Functions:

PROVIDE SECURITY FOR SPECIAL EVENTS:

  • Provide security in event space, oversee attendees for safety purposes, theft, conflict.
  • Traffic control in parking lots.
  • Patrol event area when alcohol is served. Monitor for safety, attendees that appear over-intoxicated.
  • Ensure alcohol is contained in permitted areas only.
  • Monitor access point to parking garage for drunk driving and/or irrational behavior.
  • Backstage guard for concerts or music.
  • Guards for controlling points of access during event.
  • Monitor areas where money handling/counting may be involved during event hours.

PROVIDE SECURITY FOR EXHIBIT HALL EVENTS:

  • Provide security in an/or outside of event space as requested by client or directed by management.
  • Monitor attendee credentials.
  • Provide overnight security for certain Exhibition Hall multi-day events that are exhibitor based.
  • Monitor and secure activities during move-in.

GENERAL SECURITY DUTIES:

  • Patrol all assigned locations of the building, parking lot, grounds and perimeters of the venue.
  • Protect all building and property from damage, theft and vandalism.
  • Prepare parking lot for event parking.
  • Barricade sections of building according to need.
  • Investigate suspicious persons and be alert for vandalism and property damage.
  • May make corrections to unsafe conditions under the direction of management.
  • Identify and report all unsafe conditions to supervisor/ management immediately.

GENERAL SECURITY DUTIES:

  • Patrol all assigned locations of the building, parking lot, grounds and perimeters of the venue.

  • Investigate suspicious persons and be alert for vandalism and property damage.
  • May make corrections to unsafe conditions under the direction of management.
  • Identify and report all unsafe conditions to supervisor/ management immediately.
  • Acts as a greeter for incoming event attendees, in garage, lobby, porte-cochere, or other locations, providing an “Aloha welcome” with a smile and offering assistance and information.
  • Direct traffic/perform traffic control (vehicle and/or pedestrian) to maintain a successful traffic operations at all times and provide exceptional customer service to the patrons of the Hawai‘i Convention Center. This task may be performed in various areas of the convention center as needed.

EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS AND CRISIS SCENARIOS: Assist in Emergency Evacuation and Crisis Scenario situations, practices and drills.

  • Ensure smooth training of participants in preparation of true evacuations and/or crises. Successfully participate in drills to test knowledge and practicality of evacuation/emergency procedures, conduct inspections of areas and report to security base the status of the emergency situation. Apply same practice in true scenarios.
  • May administer CPR/First Aid as needed during emergency and/or crisis situations.
  • Investigate all incidents as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum education level of: High School Diploma or its equivalency 
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience as a law enforcement officer after graduating from a recognized and bona fide law enforcement or military academy in the United States.  (Federal, County or State)
  • Possess “Active Duty” status as a police officer or hold a State of Hawai‘i Board of Private Security Certification.
  • Must have experience in crowd control, riot control, crisis deterrence, self-defense, emergency response training, negotiations training.
  • Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow departmental and company procedures accurately and efficiently.
  • Required to have a professional, positive and friendly demeanor/attitude at all times to ensure the Hawai‘i Convention Center demonstrates Aloha and delivers exceptional customer service.
  • Must be able to defuse and resolve situations when patrons/customers may be unsatisfied by being communicative, courteous and empathetic with the ability to communicate clearly specific instructions and explanations. This includes an ability to listen effectively and understand various people of which there is interaction with. All duties may be conducted in various ways including, but not limited to, in person, in writing, on the phone, on the radio and face to face and therefore, one must be able to successfully fulfill this requirement in various ways.
  • Must be able to remain in an extended stationary position for entire shift (8-10 hours).
  • Must be able to walk, run or move quickly to respond to emergency situations.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, weekdays, weekends, holidays and additional hours as venue schedule requires.
  • First Aid / CPRCertification
